To kick off 2018 the Cape Cod Rivers Observatory began sampling a new river – the Weweantic. The Weweantic is the largest freshwater tributary of Buzzards Bay. It rises in Carver and flows through several swamps, cranberry bogs, and impoundments during its journey to Buzzards Bay. It is home to one of the last remaining anadromous smelt and white perch runs this far south in Massachusetts, and some of its tributaries still support wild brook trout. The sampling will occur weekly at the Douglas S. Westgate conservation area. This new sampling comes as part of our new partnership with the Buzzards Bay Coalition.
