As of May 20th, our little river monitoring project completed its second year! Thanks to the wonderful volunteer effort by Rob Stenson, leadership of Max Holmes and dedication of research assistants Anya Suslova, Kelsey Chenowith and Justin Fleming, the Cape Cod Rivers Observatory has grown from just 4 pilot sites on 4 rivers to 12 sites on 9 rivers! Not only are we excited to begin our third year with a new river addition on the horizon, but we are excited and interested to see some odd trends beginning to repeat themselves as the season progresses into summer! In the coming weeks we’ll be adding regular sampling on the Sippican River in Rochester. In addition, in the previous two summers we’ve noticed a trend in Herring Brook in Falmouth, where the pH is significantly higher than the other local rivers. We are very excited to investigate this phenomenon this summer and suspect it will be attributed to some biological activity within Wings Pond.
